Region - Africa - India

The lion is second in size only to the tiger when it comes to the big cats. The ‘king of beasts’ is powerfully built and a superb hunter.

Depending on which region the lions come from, the colour of their coats may differ. Lions from hot areas tend to have lighter coats. All male lions have dark hairs around the neck called a mane. Females are smaller and don’t have manes but are responsible for hunting for the pride.

A pride could have up to 40 lions although this is an unusually big group. Females generally stay with the same pride for good unless there is a food shortage. Lions are found through Africa, Europe, North America and some parts of Asia like India.
